Peace Between Palestine and Israel??

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is one of the world’s most unstable conflicts being a major source of chaos, damage of property and deaths. The wars were characterized by many clashes on one side and reprisals by the Israelis. The cause of the conflict suggests the ongoing hatred of Arabs and Jews. The recent major conflict took place in 2005 and the Israelis lost some clout to the Palestinians. The Israeli withdrawal made the influence of the militant group Hamas, which in 2007 took full control of the Gaza Strip, even stronger.

There have various peace keeping processes that were initiated notably the Oslo Accords of 1993, that saw the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, recognize the existence of Israel, the 2000 Camp David Summit, convened by the then US president Bill Clinton and the Taba Summit of 2001. The road map to peace maintenance involved asking the question of who has the key in eradicating these ongoing conflicts. There are important people on both sides of the conflicts and one word from those people can trigger a huge disaster.

There is huge international involvement in the ongoing peace process particularly with the Geneva Accord, under which Israel would give back all the territories outside the current security route fence and Palestinian refugees would return to Palestinian State not to Israel. I did not personally realise how far reaching this unruly situation was until I spent a few months on a peacekeeping job in Qatar.

The United States involvement is also a key factor. The foreign policies implemented should ensure that there is peace between the two states for there to be productivity especially in Palestine. The other issue; the acceptance of both states to want peace, most of the people want vengeance and retribution and the thought of having a peaceful coexistence with each other is not an option.

Peace is a funny word and many people believe that it means simply the absence of war. It is difficult to have peace and certainly not lasting peace if there is not some form of trust between the parties. If every questionable or simple act brings about mass demonstrations and retaliations then the peace process will be continuing for another lifetime.
